Enjoy free outdoor concerts throughout the summer at Michigan Lake Huron Shore. The Tawas Community Concert Band performs every Monday evening. On Tuesday nights, from late June through Labor Day, downtown Newman Street becomes the stage for rock and country bands.On select weekends in June, August and September, the 85-foot schooner Appledore IV embarks on sightseeing excursions. Tickets are a bit pricey (adults $25, students $20), but watching the tall ship glide away is free. Annual vehicle permits give access to any Michigan state park except the three Mackinac Historic State Parks ($24/resident, $29/ nonresident; daily $6/resident, $8/nonresident).

Northwest of town, golf on three courses, including the challenging and nationally acclaimed Gailes Scottish links layout at Lakewood Shores. By golf standards, the club is a major bargain. Weekday green fees range from $28 to $55 ($35 to $62 weekends). If your budget is tighter, a few dollars buys you a round at Hunt’s Mini Golf.

GRAYLING

Hike the 1¼-mile Old-Growth Trail through groves of 350- to 400-year-old white pines towering up to 150 feet above the mossy forest floor at Hartwick Pines State Park, less than 10 miles north of town. The trail leads to Hartwick Pines Logging Museum, dotted with frontier lumber gear and featuring a replica bunkhouse. Admission is free with a permit. Southwest of Grayling, 60- acre Wellington Farm, USA interprets rural life during the Great Depression with a blacksmith shop, grist mill and other structures. An afternoon of fun costs $7 for adults and $5 for children; guided tours included in admission cost.
